Description
About the Audi A8 Air Suspension
The Audi A8 is Audi’s flagship full-size luxury sedan, and from the D3 chassis (2003 to 2010) onward, every A8 sold in the US has used a sophisticated air suspension system that is among the most advanced in any production luxury sedan. The system pairs air springs at each corner with electronically adjustable adaptive dampers, controlled by a chassis ECU that monitors height sensors, pressure sensors, vehicle speed, steering angle, and driving mode selection.
The Three A8 Chassis Generations
| Generation | Details |
|---|---|
| D3 Chassis (2003 to 2010) | First-generation full air suspension on the US A8. 4-corner air springs with CDC (Continuously Damping Control). Common failure: air spring leaks past 100,000 miles. |
| D4 Chassis (2011 to 2017) | Refined air suspension with sport-tuned dampers on S8. Adaptive air suspension standard, sport package adds firmer calibration. Compressor remains the highest-failure component. |
| D5 Chassis (2018 to 2024) | Latest A8 air suspension with predictive active suspension on certain trims. Uses electromechanical actuators alongside air springs for predictive ride leveling. |
Common Reasons to Replace Audi A8 Air Suspension Components
- Air spring leak (the most common A8 air suspension failure), causing the car to sag overnight or on one corner
- Compressor failure from constantly trying to inflate a leaking system, hard-fail mode
- Compressor relay failure (less common, easy fix)
- Valve block O-ring leak, intermittent leak that worsens over time
- Height sensor failure causing erratic ride height
- Compressor air dryer saturation, leading to moisture in the system
A8 Air Suspension Components We Carry
- Front air struts (with adaptive damper integrated)
- Rear air springs (separate from shocks on most years)
- Air compressor with integrated dryer
- Compressor relay and harness
- Valve block (also called manifold valve)
- Height sensors
- Air lines and fittings
- Complete air suspension kits (all components for full system replacement)
What Ships and What Does Not

Direct-Fit Vehicle Applications
Audi A8 air suspension components are compatible with the following:
| Vehicle | Compatibility |
|---|---|
| Audi A8 D3 | 2003 to 2010 (4E body code) |
| Audi A8 L D3 | 2003 to 2010 long-wheelbase |
| Audi A8 D4 | 2011 to 2017 (4H body code) |
| Audi A8 L D4 | 2011 to 2017 long-wheelbase |
| Audi A8 D5 | 2018 to 2024 (4N body code) |
| Audi A8 L D5 | 2018 to 2024 long-wheelbase |
| Audi S8 (D3, D4, D5) | All years (S8 uses higher-spec adaptive air with sport tune) |
Many A8 air suspension components are also shared with VW Phaeton (D3 chassis) and certain Audi Q7 first-generation (4L chassis) applications. Always confirm year and chassis at order.
Quality Control Workflow
These are new Audi A8 air suspension components in OEM specification. Quality control includes:
- Pressure test on every air strut and air spring before packaging
- Compressor cycle test under simulated load
- Valve block leak test
- Adaptive damper electrical continuity check
- Height sensor calibration check
- Mounting hardware fit verification
These are new components, not used. We do not sell used air suspension components because used air struts have unknown remaining service life. New components only.

The classic early sign is the car sitting low overnight, particularly on one corner. As the air spring develops a leak, the compressor works harder and harder to maintain ride height. Eventually the compressor fails from continuous run, and the car drops to its bump stops. Other signs include erratic ride height, compressor running for excessive durations, and a 'Vehicle Level' warning on the instrument cluster.
Generations. D3 (2003 to 2010, 4E body code) was the first US A8 with full air suspension. D4 (2011 to 2017, 4H body code) refined the system with sport-tuned dampers on S8. D5 (2018 to 2024, 4N body code) introduced predictive active suspension on certain trims using electromechanical actuators alongside air springs. Components are NOT interchangeable across generations.
New. We do not sell used air suspension components because used air struts have unknown remaining service life. The aged rubber bladders and seals in a used air strut are unreliable. All components shipped are new OEM-specification from established manufacturers including Arnott, Bilstein, and Continental.
For most components, yes. After installing air struts, height sensors, or the valve block, the system typically needs module adaptation in VCDS (or equivalent VAG-COM tool) to recalibrate ride height and confirm component operation. The car will often still drive without adaptation but with reduced functionality or fault codes. Plan for VCDS access at installation.
Strongly recommended if the original compressor has been running on a leaking system. A compressor that has been running excessively to maintain pressure on a leaking strut typically has limited remaining service life. Complete air suspension kits include compressor refresh for this reason. Inexpensive insurance against a second repair visit.
Highly variable. A single air spring replacement may run $300 to $700 for the component, plus 2 to 4 hours of labor. A complete system refresh (all four corners plus compressor plus valve block) can exceed $3,000 in parts plus 6 to 10 hours of labor. The advantage of complete kits is one labor visit instead of repeated trips.
Yes, with aftermarket coil-over conversion kits. The conversion eliminates air suspension complexity but loses adaptive damping, ride height adjustment, and the comfort-and-sport mode switching. For aging A8 owners outside the warranty period who want to escape air suspension repair cycles, the conversion is a real option. Multiple aftermarket suppliers offer A8 coil conversion kits.
Many components yes. The D3 A8 shares its platform with the Volkswagen Phaeton, and many air suspension components (notably air springs and compressor) are shared. Specific year and chassis confirmation is required. Tell us your Phaeton year when ordering.

Werner B. –
Got a pair of front air struts and a compressor for a 2008 A8 D3. Chassis generation confirmed (D3), corner locations verified before payment, pressure-tested before packaging. Plan VCDS module adaptation at install per their note. Foundation for the suspension refresh is exactly right.
Marc V. –
Sourced a complete air suspension kit for a 2014 A8 D4. All four corners plus compressor plus valve block matched as a system. Adaptive damper compatibility verified for the year and trim. Components from established suppliers, pressure-tested before shipment. Saved a return-trip on parts that the dealer would have charged a fortune for.
