The 4.6L Triton is the most widely produced engine in Ford’s modular V8 family, made from 1991 to 2014 across passenger cars, full-size trucks, performance Mustangs, and luxury sedans. It produced as little as 215 horsepower in early F-150 base trim and as much as 390 horsepower in the Mach 1 4V DOHC, all from the same 281 cubic inch displacement. The aluminum (or iron, in truck applications) block uses 90 millimeter bore and 90 millimeter stroke, near-square geometry that gives the 4.6 Triton its smooth power delivery and high-rpm willingness.

The three variants share a block but have completely different heads, intakes, accessory drives, and ECU calibrations.

The 2V and 3V cylinder heads have a known issue with spark plug threads stripping or plugs blowing out under combustion pressure, particularly when over-torqued or under-torqued at installation. The aluminum head's shallow plug threads are the design weakness. Aftermarket thread inserts (Time-Sert, Helicoil, or Ford's own kit) repair this without head removal. We test thread integrity on every 4.6 Triton before shipping.

The 3V variant uses Variable Cam Timing actuators (cam phasers) on each cam to adjust valve timing in real time. The phasers can develop internal wear that produces characteristic ticking noise and VCT-related fault codes. Phaser replacement is a known 3V service item, typically done with new timing chains as a set. We inspect phaser operation on every 3V we ship.

Depends on year and variant. The 1996 to 2004 Mustang GT used the 2V Triton. The 2005 to 2010 Mustang GT used the 3V Triton. They are not directly interchangeable. The 2V GT and 3V GT use different intake manifolds, accessory drives, ECU calibrations, and oil pans. Match the variant to your specific Mustang GT year.

No. The 2V intake manifold has different bolt patterns and port shapes than the 3V intake. The 3V uses smaller ports designed for the 3V head's improved breathing characteristics. Cross-installing requires different manifolds and is not a direct bolt-on swap.

Different Mustang and Lincoln applications. The 1996 to 2004 Mustang Cobra and 2003 to 2004 Mach 1 use the 4V Aluminator-related 4.6L producing 300 to 390 hp. The 1993 to 1998 Lincoln Mark VIII and 1995 to 2002 Lincoln Continental use the 4V InTech 4.6L producing 270 to 300 hp. The 2003 to 2004 Mercury Marauder uses the 4V Marauder variant. The 4V heads share architecture but specific calibration and supporting hardware differ.
