Description

Transmission Background

The Ford 10R80 is the 10-speed longitudinal automatic that powers the modern F-150, Mustang GT and GT500, Bronco, Raptor, Ranger, Expedition, and Lincoln Navigator. Co-developed by Ford and General Motors starting in 2013 and brought to market in 2017 in the F-150 and Mustang GT, the 10R80 replaced the 6R80 6-speed and immediately became the highest gear-count automatic ever offered in a Ford pickup or pony car.

The 10 forward gears, wide 7.4:1 ratio span, integrated lockup torque converter, and direct-acting solenoids deliver smoother acceleration, faster part-throttle response, and significantly better highway fuel economy than the 6R80 it replaced. The unit is rated for up to 700 lb-ft of stock torque, and aftermarket-built versions support up to 1,000 horsepower without changing clutch capacity.

The 10R80 is found in the Ford F-150 (2017 onward), F-150 Raptor (2017 onward), Mustang GT (2018 onward), Mustang GT500 (2020 onward), Mustang Mach 1, Bronco (2021 onward), Ranger (2019 onward), Expedition (2018 onward), Lincoln Navigator (2018 onward), and Aviator. It is the universal Ford rear-wheel-drive automatic of this generation.

When Replacement Becomes Necessary

  • Torque converter shudder, common on early 2017 to 2019 units (well documented in TSB 19-2155 and TSB 20-2331)
  • Harsh 1-2 or 2-3 shifts that cannot be smoothed by a re-flash
  • Bind in reverse or delayed engagement after shift to drive
  • Ratcheting noise on light throttle, often a sign of internal valve body wear
  • Slipping under load (most common after high mileage on towing or modified applications)
  • Loss of one or more gears (limp mode)
  • Cracked case from impact or off-road damage

Known Weak Points

  • Torque converter shudder (2017 to 2019): the most common 10R80 complaint. Caused by internal lockup clutch material that breaks down with age and contaminates the fluid. Ford issued multiple TSBs (most recently TSB 20-2331). The fix is typically a torque converter replacement plus a complete fluid flush. We inspect torque converter condition and disclose status on every unit.
  • Harsh shift complaints: early 2017 to 2018 units shipped with calibration that produced harsh 1-2 and 2-3 shifts. Ford released calibration updates. A used unit may need a re-flash to current calibration when installed.
  • Valve body wear: at very high mileage (150,000-plus) the valve body solenoid pack can develop irregular pressure modulation, causing flare on shifts. We pressure test every unit.
  • Pump cavitation on neglected fluid units: 10R80s with overdue fluid service can develop pump cavitation noise. We document fluid condition before shipment.
  • Calibration mismatch: a 2017 calibration will not run optimally with a 2022 vehicle and vice versa. We disclose calibration year so your shop knows what to flash.

10R80 Variants by Year and Application

Year matching matters for ECU and TCM calibration:

Year Application Notes
2017 to 2018 F-150 (3.5 EB, 5.0L), Mustang GT, Expedition Original release. Highest TSB activity.
2019 to 2020 F-150, Ranger, Mustang, Expedition, Aviator Updated calibration, improved shift logic.
2020 onward GT500 (HO calibration), Raptor R, Tremor Higher torque calibration.
2021 onward Bronco, F-150 (refresh) Latest calibration generation.
2024 onward Mustang Dark Horse, F-150 refresh Most current spec.
Year matching matters for ECU and TCM calibration. We document the exact year and TCM calibration code on every unit so your shop knows what to flash.

Used OEM Versus Professional Rebuild

For an F-150, Mustang, Bronco, Ranger, Expedition, or Navigator with a failed 10R80, used OEM is the cost-effective replacement path. Our units ship with calibration year documented, torque converter condition disclosed, and shift testing completed. A specialist rebuild with an updated torque converter (addressing the shudder issue) and current-calibration flash makes sense for high-mileage applications or modified vehicles where reliability margin justifies the additional investment. Rebuilt 10R80 units typically run $4,500 to $7,500 plus core deposit from established Ford transmission shops.

Inspection Workflow

  • Pressure tested and shift tested through all 10 forward gears and reverse
  • Year and calibration code documented for shop flash compatibility
  • Torque converter inspected and condition disclosed, the shudder issue specifically addressed
  • Fluid condition assessed for pump cavitation indicators
  • Valve body solenoid pack pressure modulation checked
  • External seal and gasket inspection
  • Output configuration confirmed: RWD or 4WD

Pre-Purchase Buyer Notes

  • Calibration year matching matters: a 2017 calibration will not run optimally in a 2022 vehicle and vice versa. We disclose the calibration year so your shop knows what to flash to current spec at installation.
  • Plan for a torque converter assessment: even on a documented unit, having the torque converter evaluated at install (and replaced if marginal) addresses the most common 10R80 failure mode preemptively. Ford TSB 20-2331 documents the current procedure.
  • Service fluid at installation: refill with Mercon ULV per Ford spec. Generic ATF will produce shift issues and accelerate internal wear. Plan a complete fluid flush of the cooling system at the same time.
  • RWD versus 4WD: the 10R80 case is shared, but the output configuration differs. Confirm your drivetrain configuration on the call.
  • TCM may need vehicle-specific programming: the TCM (Transmission Control Module) is often vehicle-specific and may not transfer with a used transmission. Plan TCM sourcing or re-flash as part of the installation.

The 10R80 powers the Ford F-150 (2017 onward, including all engine options), F-150 Raptor (2017 onward), Mustang GT (2018 onward), Mustang GT500 (2020 onward), Mustang Mach 1 (2021 to 2023), Bronco (2021 onward), Ranger (2019 onward), Expedition (2018 onward), Lincoln Navigator (2018 onward), and Lincoln Aviator. It is the universal Ford rear-wheel-drive automatic for this generation of vehicles.

The most documented 10R80 complaint, primarily on 2017 to 2019 units. Internal lockup clutch material breaks down with age, contaminates the fluid, and produces a shudder feeling at low speeds during torque converter lockup. Ford issued multiple TSBs documenting the fix, most recently TSB 20-2331. The procedure typically involves a torque converter replacement and a complete fluid flush. We inspect torque converter condition and disclose status on every unit.

It will physically install but the calibration will be a generation behind. The TCM (Transmission Control Module) needs to be re-flashed to current calibration for proper shift behavior with your vehicle. We document the calibration year on every order so your shop knows what to flash.

Ford Mercon ULV. Do not use any other ATF type. Generic ATF or wrong-spec fluid causes shift issues and accelerated internal wear. Plan a complete fluid flush at installation regardless of the donor's recent service history.

Factory rated at up to 700 lb-ft of stock torque. Aftermarket-built versions with upgraded torque converters, valve body work, and current calibration support up to 1,000 horsepower without clutch capacity changes. For very high power builds, full rebuilds with billet input shafts and improved torque converters are common.

Architecturally similar. Ford and GM co-developed the 10-speed starting in 2013 with shared gear set design, but each manufacturer produces its own version with different valve body, calibration, and electronics. GM's equivalent is the 10L80 (RWD) and 10L90 (high-output). They share design ancestry but the production units are not directly interchangeable.

Possibly. The 10R80 case is the same for RWD and 4WD applications, but the output configuration differs. We confirm RWD or 4WD configuration on the call so we ship the correct unit for your truck.

No. There is no core return required.

2 reviews for Ford 10R80 10-Speed Automatic Transmission for Sale | OEM RWD and 4WD

  1. Wesley T.

Got a 10R80 for my 2019 F-150 EcoBoost after the original developed torque converter shudder that progressed past the TSB fix. Calibration year was documented before payment and torque converter status was disclosed as inspected good. Had my shop flash to current calibration at install. Shifts are smooth, no shudder.

  2. Cole R.

Sourced a 10R80 for a 2020 Mustang GT build. Honest about it being a 2020 unit, not the latest calibration. Pressure tested results were detailed. Plan a re-flash and torque converter assessment as part of the install per their recommendation. Solid value compared to a new unit.
