Description

Engine Background

Lamborghini’s V12 line traces back to the original 3.5-liter design by Giotto Bizzarrini for the 350GT in 1963. Over the following six decades, that same architectural foundation, gradually evolving, motivated nearly every flagship Lamborghini through the Diablo, Murcielago, and into the Aventador. The Aventador’s all-new L539 engine, introduced in 2011, broke from the Bizzarrini lineage and represented Lamborghini’s first clean-sheet V12 in nearly fifty years. Production of the Aventador V12 ran through 2022, when the final Aventador Ultimae shipped, ending a chapter of naturally aspirated, naturally angry Italian engineering that the next generation hybrid powertrains have not replaced.

Whether you are working with a Diablo, Murcielago, or Aventador, the V12 you need depends entirely on the chassis. Diablo engines (1990 to 2001) used 5.7L and 6.0L variants developing 485 to 575 hp. Murcielago engines (2001 to 2010) ran 6.2L and 6.5L versions producing 572 to 670 hp. The Aventador’s L539 V12 (2011 to 2022) displaced 6.5L and made between 691 and 770 hp across SV, SVJ, and Ultimae trim. Sourcing an authentic, matching unit requires verifying the engine code and the donor chassis, both of which are documented before shipment.

Lamborghini V12 replacements are inherently specialist work. The engine assemblies are large, heavy, and require Lamborghini-trained installation work for ECU adaptation, dry-sump connections (Aventador), and cooling system integration. We ship the engine. Installation belongs in the hands of an exotic specialist.

When Replacement Becomes Necessary

  • Major internal damage that exceeds the cost of repair, more common on track-driven examples that have suffered over-rev events
  • Severe oil starvation damage, occasionally seen on aggressively driven Murcielago and Diablo units
  • Catastrophic timing-chain failure on a Diablo or Murcielago left without prompt maintenance, leading to valve-piston contact
  • Severe head gasket failure or coolant cross-contamination requiring complete teardown
  • Donor-engine sourcing for a salvaged or stolen-recovery chassis that needs a verified replacement

Known Weak Points

  • ECU and ancillary VIN-linking: Modern Aventador V12 units use ECUs that may be VIN-linked to the original chassis. ECU adaptation through a Lamborghini specialist is required at installation. We disclose ECU status on every unit before payment.
  • ISR transmission considerations (Aventador): The Aventador pairs the V12 with the ISR single-clutch automated manual. Engine replacement in an Aventador almost always intersects with transmission and clutch service. Budget accordingly.
  • Murcielago e-gear hydraulics: Murcielago units paired with e-gear automated transmissions need hydraulic system verification at installation. We supply the engine; the transmission and e-gear hydraulics are separate concerns.
  • Diablo timing chain service: The Bizzarrini-era V12 in the Diablo uses timing chains that require periodic service. A Diablo V12 with unknown service history should have chain components and tensioners inspected before commissioning.
  • Cooling system complexity: All Lamborghini V12 chassis use elaborate cooling configurations. Replacement work must include cooling-system flush, refill, and bleed by a specialist.

Lamborghini V12 Variants

Engine Code Application Years Displacement HP
Bizzarrini lineage (multiple codes) Diablo, Diablo SV, VT, GT, 6.0 1990 to 2001 5.7L / 6.0L 485 to 575 hp
Bizzarrini lineage (later development) Murcielago, Murcielago LP640, LP670-4 SV 2001 to 2010 6.2L / 6.5L 572 to 670 hp
L539 (clean-sheet design) Aventador LP700-4, LP750-4 SV, SVJ, Ultimae 2011 to 2022 6.5L 691 to 770 hp

What Ships and What Does Not

INCLUDED Engine assembly as removed from donor vehicle. Specific accessories vary by unit and are confirmed before shipping.
NOT INCLUDED ECU and wiring harness (typically), exhaust manifolds, cooling system components, transmission, e-gear or ISR hydraulics, dry-sump oil system components (Aventador, may vary).
ECU NOTE Lamborghini ECU adaptation typically required at installation. Confirm requirements with your Lamborghini specialist before ordering.
Core Note No core charge.

Direct-Fit Vehicle Applications

Lamborghini Aventador (LP700-4, LP750-4 SV, SVJ, Ultimae) 2011 to 2022
Lamborghini Murcielago (LP580, LP640, LP670-4 SV) 2001 to 2010
Lamborghini Diablo (base, VT, SV, GT, 6.0) 1990 to 2001
Limited Production: Reventon, Centenario, Veneno, Sian Aventador-derived chassis with specialty V12 calibrations

Each generation’s V12 is application-specific. An Aventador L539 does not bolt into a Murcielago chassis, and a Diablo V12 does not interchange with a Murcielago. We confirm donor chassis and generation before every order.

Not sure if this fits? Call (240) 306-7051. We verify the donor application and your receiving chassis before any order is committed.

Used OEM Versus Specialist Rebuild

For a Lamborghini V12 replacement, used OEM is essentially the only practical path. Factory new V12 assemblies are not commercially available outside of Lamborghini’s own service operations, and specialist rebuilds run into significant six-figure territory at the few shops worldwide qualified to perform them. A documented used OEM unit, generation-verified and donor-chassis confirmed, is the realistic option for any owner facing a serious internal failure.

Inspection Workflow

  • Full external inspection of block, heads, accessory drive, cooling-system ports, and accessible internal areas
  • Engine code and generation confirmed (Bizzarrini-lineage versus L539)
  • Donor chassis identification documented
  • External oil leak assessment including front and rear seals, valve covers, and oil pan
  • Mileage logged where available from service records or donor vehicle documentation
  • ECU adaptation status disclosed on every order

Mileage varies by unit. Where available from the donor vehicle we provide it. Where it cannot be confirmed, we disclose this before the order is placed.

Pre-Purchase Buyer Notes

  • Specialist installation is non-negotiable: Only a Lamborghini-experienced exotic specialist should install one of these engines. Cooling, ECU, transmission interface, and dry-sump (Aventador) work is not standard exotic shop fare.
  • ECU adaptation costs are part of the budget: Lamborghini ECU programming through an authorized dealer is required in most cases. This is in addition to engine purchase and labor.
  • Match the donor generation exactly: Diablo, Murcielago, and Aventador engines do not interchange. Confirm your chassis VIN and target engine generation before any commitment.
  • Cooling system service at installation: Replace coolant, inspect all flexible lines, and verify the radiator and intercooler condition during install. These systems are integral to V12 longevity.
  • Limited supply, long lead times: Even when we have units in stock, Lamborghini V12 inventory shifts rapidly. Call to confirm current availability rather than relying on a listing alone.

Inspected and Documented, Used OEM

The V12 has been the heart of Lamborghini flagships since the 350GT in 1963. In the modern era, that means the Diablo (1990 to 2001), Murcielago (2001 to 2010), and Aventador (2011 to 2022). Limited-edition cars including the Reventon, Centenario, Veneno, and Sian use Aventador-derived L539 V12s with model-specific calibrations.

The Bizzarrini-lineage V12, designed in 1963, powered the Diablo and Murcielago through 2010. The L539, introduced in 2011 for the Aventador, is a clean-sheet design and represents Lamborghini's first new V12 architecture in nearly fifty years. The two are not interchangeable. The donor application determines which engine fits your chassis.

No. A Diablo V12 does not bolt into a Murcielago, a Murcielago V12 does not fit an Aventador, and so on. We confirm donor chassis and engine code against your specific receiving chassis before any order ships.

Lamborghini ECUs are often VIN-linked and require authorized dealer adaptation at installation. We document ECU status on every order so you and your specialist can plan accordingly.

Only a Lamborghini-experienced exotic specialist. The cooling system, ECU adaptation, transmission interface (ISR for Aventador, e-gear for Murcielago), and dry-sump connections on Aventador all require specialist knowledge. General performance shops are not equipped for this work.

No. There is no core return required for any Lamborghini V12 sold through us.

Free freight pallet delivery to every U.S. state using packaging built for exotic-engine assemblies. Transit timing is confirmed on the call alongside donor verification.

Call (240) 306-7051 with your chassis VIN or generation and target engine code. Lamborghini V12 inventory shifts rapidly and a live conversation is the only reliable way to verify what is in stock.
