Description

Engine Background

The Honda H22A is the high-revving 2.2L DOHC VTEC inline-four that powered the Honda Prelude through its fourth and fifth generations from 1992 to 2001, plus a small handful of premium JDM Accord variants. With a 7,200 rpm redline (7,800 on Type S and Type R), 190 to 220 horsepower depending on variant, a forged steel crankshaft and rods, and a DOHC VTEC head, the H22A is widely considered one of the finest naturally aspirated inline-four engines ever built. The combination of high-rpm character, a strong forged bottom end, and the famous Honda VTEC crossover at 5,200 rpm gives the H22A a soundtrack and powerband that JDM enthusiasts have been chasing for thirty years.

The H22A architecture shares displacement with the F22 family but is a distinct engine. The DOHC head with VTEC, the bore and stroke, the rod ratio, and the forged bottom end are unique to the H22 series. Factory output ranges from 190 horsepower (US H22A1) to 220 horsepower (JDM Type S and Type R), all from a 2,156 cc inline-four with no forced induction.

The H22A appeared factory only in the Honda Prelude (1992 to 2001), the JDM Honda Accord SiR (CL1 chassis, 1997 to 2002), and the JDM and Euro Honda Accord Euro R and Type R (CL1, 2000 to 2002). It was never offered factory in any Civic, Integra, CR-X, or Del Sol. However, its compact dimensions, B-series-style mounting, and ability to swap into the Civic, Integra, CR-X, and Del Sol chassis with off-the-shelf mount kits have made it the single most popular high-performance Honda swap engine of the past two decades.

When Replacement Becomes Necessary

  • Excessive oil consumption beyond one quart per 1,500 miles
  • Rod knock from high-rpm abuse or oil starvation
  • VTEC solenoid failure causing no VTEC engagement above 5,200 rpm
  • Cylinder wall scoring or piston ring failure
  • Loss of compression on one or more cylinders
  • Worn timing belt that has been ignored beyond the 90,000-mile interval (interference engine)
  • Spun bearing from track-day abuse or low oil pressure
  • Cracked block from improper head gasket replacement or hydrolock

What to Know Before You Buy

  • Variant matters: H22A1 (US Prelude Si VTEC 1992 to 1996, 190 hp, OBD1), H22A4 (US Prelude Type SH 1997 to 2001, 200 hp, OBD2), H22A redtop (JDM 1992 to 1996, 200 hp, OBD1), H22A blacktop (JDM 1996 to 2001, 200 to 220 hp, OBD2), H22A Type S (JDM Prelude SiR Spec, 220 hp), H22A Type R (rare JDM, 220 hp). Valve cover color (red or black) indicates the generation.
  • OBD1 versus OBD2: H22A1 is OBD1 (1992 to 1995). H22A4 and most JDM blacktops are OBD2. ECU and harness must match. We confirm OBD configuration on every order.
  • Redtop versus blacktop: a cosmetic difference (red or black valve cover) plus minor cam profile and intake manifold revisions. Both are excellent and neither is dramatically better.
  • US H22A1 has 10.0:1 compression and 190 hp. JDM redtop has higher compression and 200 hp. JDM blacktop Type S has 11.0:1 compression and 220 hp. Match the compression ratio to your fuel quality and tune.
  • Timing belt is interference: the H22A is an interference engine. A snapped timing belt destroys the valvetrain. The belt interval is 90,000 miles. Verify the belt service history on any unit you buy, or plan a belt and water pump refresh at installation.

H22A Variants by Year and Application

Verified output and applications across the H22A family:

Variant Years Application HP OBD Notes
H22A1 1992 to 1996 US Honda Prelude Si VTEC 190 hp OBD1 Most common US variant. 10.0:1 compression.
H22A4 1997 to 2001 US Honda Prelude (5th gen Type SH) 200 hp OBD2 Refined OBD2 variant. ATTS on Type SH.
H22A redtop 1992 to 1996 JDM Prelude SiR 200 hp OBD1 10.6:1 compression. Red valve cover.
H22A blacktop 1996 to 2001 JDM Prelude SiR 200 hp OBD2 Slightly revised cams. Black valve cover.
H22A Type S 1996 to 2001 JDM Prelude SiR Spec 220 hp OBD2 11.0:1 compression. Higher cam lift.
H22A Euro R 2000 to 2002 JDM and Euro Accord Euro R (CL1) 220 hp OBD2 Highest output Accord H22A.
H22A2 1992 to 1996 Euro Prelude 2.2 VTi 185 hp OBD1 Euro variant of H22A1.
The H22A redtop (early 1992 to 1996 JDM) and H22A4 (US 1997 to 2001) are the two most commonly purchased used H22As in the US. The Type S and Type R variants are rare and command premium pricing. Call (240) 306-7051 to confirm variant availability.

Used OEM Versus Specialist Rebuild

For a Prelude restoration or a moderately tuned Honda swap project, a documented used H22A with verified variant, compression results, and OBD configuration is the right starting point. For a forced-induction build targeting 350-plus wheel horsepower, a specialist rebuild with fresh rings, ARP bolts, and verified bearings is the better investment. Specialist-built H22A short blocks typically run $2,500 to $4,500 from established Honda builders, plus head work.

Inspection Workflow

  • Compression test logged across all 4 cylinders with uniformity reported
  • Variant confirmed: H22A1, H22A4, redtop, blacktop, Type S, or Type R
  • OBD1 versus OBD2 documented for ECU and harness compatibility
  • VTEC solenoid function verified where running unit available
  • Timing belt service history documented where available from donor records
  • External oil leak survey at valve cover, front and rear seals, oil pan

Pre-Purchase Buyer Notes

  • Match variant to your project: H22A1 is correct for a 1992 to 1996 US Prelude restoration. H22A4 is correct for a 1997 to 2001 US Prelude. For JDM swap projects, blacktop Type S delivers the highest factory output.
  • OBD compatibility matters for swaps: an OBD1 engine in an OBD2 chassis (or vice versa) requires ECU swap or conversion harness. Plan this before installation.
  • Compression ratio versus fuel grade: higher-compression Type S and Type R variants benefit from premium fuel. US 87-octane is acceptable on the H22A1 but marginal on JDM 11.0:1 compression units.
  • Timing belt service at install: plan a fresh timing belt, water pump, tensioner, and oil seals at installation regardless of the donor service history. Cheap insurance against an interference-engine catastrophe.
  • VTEC solenoid health: a failed VTEC solenoid means no high-cam engagement. Test or replace at install. The solenoid is inexpensive and accessible.
