Description
About the Honda K24 Engine
The Honda K24 Engine is one of the beasts from Honda K family of engines, and it would be fair to call the K24 the most beloved engine in the family for car culture. Introduced in 2001, the K24 became the workhorse Inline-4 across Honda mid-size lineup and the favorite swap engine for older Honda enthusiasts. This Honda K24 Engine for sale at Part Nests is fairly used, but make no mistake, this used K24 Engine delivers the ultimate reliability and brings out the top performance from your car.
Application of the Honda K24 Engine
- Honda Accord: The K24 is found in various Honda Accord models from 2003 to 2017, providing a balance of power and fuel efficiency suitable for a midsize sedan. Variants include K24A4 (2003 to 2007 Accord, 160 hp), K24A8 (2006 to 2007 Accord, 166 hp), and K24Z3 (2008 to 2012 Accord, 177 to 190 hp).
- Honda CR-V: Torque output and reliability of the K24 make it perfect for the CR-V SUV. Variants include K24A1 (2002 to 2006 CR-V, 160 hp) and K24Z6 (2007 to 2014 CR-V, 166 to 185 hp).

Key Features of the Honda K24 Engine
- Displacement: 2.4 liters provides a great middle ground between power and fuel efficiency. The longer stroke (99mm) versus the K20 86mm stroke gives the K24 superior low-end and mid-range torque, making it preferable for street driving over the higher-RPM K20.
- i-VTEC: Honda iconic intelligent Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control system. The K24 uses i-VTEC to optimize valve timing AND lift, providing strong torque output at low RPM and electric power delivery at the top of the rev range.
- Aluminum Construction: Block and head are aluminum, reducing weight while maintaining strength. The K24 is approximately 310 to 350 lbs depending on variant, very light for its 2.4L displacement.
- DOHC Configuration: Dual overhead camshafts provide better intake and exhaust valve control and improved engine breathing across the RPM range.
- Multi-Point Fuel Injection (MPFI): Sequential MPFI delivers precise fuel metering to each cylinder for fuel efficiency and clean combustion. Note: Standard K24A and K24Z variants use MPFI port injection. The newer K24W (Earth Dreams) introduced direct injection on Accord starting 2013, but the standard K24 listed here is MPFI.
- Engine Management System: Modern Honda PCM with electronic throttle, ETC, and OBD-II diagnostics provides factory smooth operation and enables aftermarket tuning with Hondata, KPro, or aftermarket standalones for performance builds.
- Reliability: The K24 is well-known for Honda renowned reliability. Properly maintained K24 engines routinely log 200,000-plus miles on the original short block. The aluminum block, sleeved iron liners, forged crankshaft, and chain-driven cams all contribute to long life.
- Chain-Driven Cams: Unlike timing-belt engines, the K24 uses a maintenance-free timing chain that lasts the life of the engine with proper oil maintenance.
K-Series Swap Compatibility
The K24 biggest claim to fame in enthusiast culture is the K-swap: replacing older D-series, B-series, F-series, or H-series engines in earlier Hondas with the modern K-series. The K24 is preferred over the K20 for street swap projects because:
- More torque: 162 to 170 lb-ft vs the K20 142 lb-ft
- More displacement: 2.4L vs 2.0L gives stronger pull through the entire RPM range
- Easier to find used: The K24 was sold in millions of Accords / CR-Vs / Elements / TSXs, making used cores plentiful
- Hybrid head builds: Top builders combine a K24 short block with a K20A or K20Z3 head for the best of both: K24 displacement and torque with K20 high-RPM head flow
Signs You Need a Replacement K24
- Loss of compression on one or more cylinders
- Excessive oil consumption (a known issue on high-mileage K24Z3 and later variants)
- Timing chain rattle on cold start (chain stretch / tensioner wear)
- VTC actuator rattle (the variable timing control unit on the intake cam is a known wear item)
- Connecting rod knock under load
- Donor Accord, CR-V, Element, TSX, or Civic Si has been totaled and the engine is being moved
- K-swap project requiring fresh starting point
- Existing K24 high-mileage and showing wear
Known K24 Issues We Inspect Before Shipping
- Timing chain stretch: A documented K-series wear item, particularly on high-mileage units. Inspected during run test.
- VTC actuator rattle: The variable timing control unit on the intake cam can rattle on cold start when worn. Listened for and disclosed.
- Oil consumption (K24Z3 and later): Some 2008-plus K24 variants developed piston ring oil consumption issues. Assessed via compression and visual inspection.
- Engine mount rubber degradation: Inspected for excessive movement under load.
- Cylinder bore condition: Inspected through bore for cylinder wall scoring or wear.
- i-VTEC system function: Verified by spinning engine to engage VTEC where possible.
- Variant authentication: Confirmed by valve cover, intake manifold style, ECU stamp, and block code.

K24 Myth Busters
- Myth: You will not find big power gains from a naturally-aspirated K24.
- Reality: Stock K24 engines are highly tunable. Bolt-on modifications (intake, exhaust, header, ECU tune via Hondata or KPro) can easily produce 220 to 250 hp from a stock K24A2 short block. K-swap builds with K20 hybrid heads, individual throttle bodies, and aggressive cams can produce 280 to 320 hp naturally aspirated. Forced induction takes K24 builds well over 500 hp on stock internals.
- Myth: Turbocharging or supercharging a K24 makes it less reliable.
- Reality: When forced induction is done properly with quality components, professional installation, and correct tuning, reliability can match or exceed naturally-aspirated configurations. The K24 robust bottom end (forged crank, strong rods, sleeved aluminum block) handles boost well. Many enthusiasts run 300 to 500 hp boosted K24s for years without issue.
- Myth: Aftermarket modifications void your warranty.
- Reality: The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act regulates manufacturer warranties. A dealership cannot blanket-deny warranty repairs simply because aftermarket parts are installed. They must prove the modification caused the specific problem they are refusing to repair. That said, a K24 sold here is a used core for repower or swap, the original Honda warranty is long expired.
- Myth: Big power gains require a complete engine rebuild.
- Reality: Bolt-on modifications (cold air intake, performance exhaust, ECU tune via Hondata KPro or RaceMe) can add 20 to 40 hp without internal engine work. These cost-effective modifications fit enthusiasts who want a meaningful performance increase without major engine work.

Depends on budget and target power. For maximum naturally-aspirated power, the K24A2 from the 2004 to 2008 Acura TSX (200 to 205 hp, 10.5:1 compression, revised cams) is the most desirable factory K24 variant. For a budget K-swap, the K24A4 from the 2003 to 2007 Accord or 2003 to 2011 Element (160 hp, mid-compression) is the most plentiful and least expensive variant. For the highest-compression K24, the JDM K24A3 from the Accord Euro-R (190 to 200 hp, 11.0:1) is the import enthusiast choice. Call us at (855) 634-4447 for guidance based on your build goals.
Displacement and character. The K20 is the 2.0L family (86mm bore, 86mm stroke, square geometry) optimized for high-RPM power. The K24 is the 2.4L family (87mm bore, 99mm stroke, longer stroke) optimized for low-end and mid-range torque. The K20 makes peak power at higher RPM (7,800 rpm in K20Z3) while the K24 makes peak torque at lower RPM (around 4,300 rpm) and pulls harder out of corners. For street swap projects, the K24 is usually preferred for its torque. For track and high-RPM builds, the K20 (or the K24-K20 hybrid head build) is the choice.
K24 short block with K20A or K20Z3 head. The K24A2 already comes with the best factory K24 head. But for builders wanting maximum naturally-aspirated power, the trick is combining a K24 short block (for displacement and torque) with a K20A or K20Z3 cylinder head (for high-RPM flow). The K20 head bolts directly to the K24 short block, and aftermarket cams, valves, and porting unlock significant power. Properly built hybrid K-series engines produce 280 to 320 hp naturally aspirated, with the K24's torque character preserved in the lower RPM range.
Yes with K-swap kits. The K24 swap into Civic EG (1992 to 1995), Civic EK (1996 to 2000), Civic EM (2001 to 2005), Civic EP (2002 to 2005), Integra DC2 (1994 to 2001), and Integra DC5 (2002 to 2006) is one of the most documented Honda swaps. The swap requires K-swap motor mounts (Hasport, Innovative Mounts, Hybrid Racing), axle adapters or K-series-compatible axles, a K-series transmission and shift linkage, K-series wiring harness (KPRO or AEM Infinity standalone), and matching radiator and fuel system. Complete swap kits are widely available.
Not compatible with older K-series MPFI ECU. The K24W (Earth Dreams) introduced direct injection on the 2013-plus Accord (2.4L variant). The K24W uses high-pressure direct injection rather than the port injection used on K24A and K24Z variants. The K24W is NOT a drop-in replacement for K24A or K24Z applications because the fuel system, ECU, and supporting hardware differ entirely. For traditional K-swap projects, source a K24A or K24Z variant. The K24W is best used in the 2013-plus Accord donor application or with a complete K24W fuel system and ECU.
Variable Timing Control actuator wear. The K-series uses a hydraulically-controlled VTC actuator on the intake camshaft that advances or retards valve timing based on engine RPM and load. On aged engines (typically past 100,000 miles), the VTC actuator can develop internal play that produces a metallic rattle on cold start, typically lasting a few seconds until oil pressure builds. The rattle itself doesn't immediately reduce performance, but it indicates the actuator is approaching service life. Replacement VTC actuators are available from Honda and the aftermarket. We listen for VTC rattle on every K24 before shipping and disclose openly.
200,000-plus miles with proper maintenance. The K24 is one of Honda's longest-lived modern engines. Aluminum block with iron liners, forged crankshaft, chain-driven cams (no timing belt service), and conservative factory tuning combine to give the K24 excellent longevity. Daily-driver K24s in Accords and Elements routinely log 250,000-plus miles on the original short block when maintained on 5,000-mile oil changes with Honda-spec 5W-20 synthetic. Track-driven K24s see shorter service life depending on tune and operating conditions.
No. There is no core return required.
